These offsets support one of the world's premier sustainable forestry program in northern Honduras. This program is dedicated to preventing the destruction of healthy forests and encouraging the planting of new trees.
Here's why saving the world's forests is so important:
- The burning, clear-cutting and degrading of the world's forests releases huge amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) into our atmosphere. The amount is estimated at 20-25% of global CO2 emissions, more than all the cars and trucks in the world combined! Every acre of forestland that we can protect or restore lightens the carbon load on our atmosphere through the natural carbon sequestration action of trees and plants.
- Most scientists now agree that reducing our CO2 emissions is not enough. We must also heal the earth’s diminished ability to reabsorb carbon from the atmosphere — and forests, especially tropical forests, are excellent carbon sinks.
- By protecting forestland, Earth Carbon Offsets also prevent catastrophic erosion, improve soil, provide habitat for thousands of species, and build sustainable local economies.
