Composting Buying Guide

Go green by composting!  Instead of putting all your food scraps in the garbage and having them end up in a landfill, simply compost them.  It's easy to do in just two steps!

Step 1:

The first step to composting is the same, whether you are creating your own compost pile or participating in your city's composting program.  Start by separating your food scraps from your garbage and recyclables.  It only takes a second as you cook or clear the table.

iconCollect the food scraps in a compost pail, such as the Green Stoneware Compost Crock icon.  It's convenient because it sits on your counter top - no more running outside or to the garage every time you cook.  Simply place food scraps in the crock until it is full.  Then carry the crock to your compost bin or pile and empty it out.

It's so beautiful, no one will know that it contains all your food scraps.  It's dishwasher safe, so that it is easy to clean.  Plus the lid has an activated charcoal filter that traps odours, so there is no disgusting smells in your kitchen.

TIP:  If you don't want to clean your compost crock everyday, simply line it with Biobag™ (100 bags) icon.  When the crock is ready to be emptied, remove the bag and throw it and all of its contents in your compost pile.  The bags are made from 100% cornstarch, which means that they are 100% natural and they are completely biodegradable.  Best of all – you don't have to clean your compost crock because it never got dirty.

Step 2a: City Composting Program

If you are participating in your city's composting program, simply place your compost bin outside for curbside collection, according to your city's collection days.

Step 2b: Building Your Own Compost Pile

icon If you are creating your own compost pile, the easiest way to do this is with a compost tumbler, such as the Back Porch Compost Tumbler icon

It takes up very little space, but can hold up to 5 cubic feet of composting materials.  Easy to use!  Simply empty the contents of your Green Stoneware Compost Crock icon into the tumbler and give it a few quick turns.  When the food scraps inside have broken down into fresh topsoil, just wheel the tumbler over to your garden bed and dump out the new soil.  It rolls so easily!

Perfect for small amounts of yard waste and food scraps.  As well, since the food scraps are locked in the tumbler, there are no odours, wild animals can't get in and you don't have to worry about trying to manage or turn large compost piles.

Here's proof that it works!  One user reported, "Made beautiful, rich soil in no time at all. Of three tomato bushes, I used it on one and the bush took off and produced bigger and prettier tomatoes faster than the other two bushes."

Another consumer has this to say about it, "This is a great composter for an average size family. Compact enough to not be an eye sore, yet efficient enough to take care of our composting needs. BEST of all, this unit is rodent proof! My last "stackable" composter was turning into the local rat condo. Also, it's fast, with consistent turning and proper balance, before you know it, you have compost!!!"
