Fruit and Vegetable Garden Design Plan
This small backyard actually has two purposes. The main purpose is to grow fruit trees and a small vegetable garden. The second purpose is to provide seating areas. The top right hand corner features a wood arbor, with benches below for seating. A second seating area is found on the patio stones in front of the sliding doors leading into the house. Stepping stones connect the two seating areas.
Providing Support For Fruits and Vegetables
Vegetables and fruits will grow better if they have the proper support and protection from the elements. Here's some great ideas of how to provide this support.
- Coil Supports
Tall wire supports allow plants to wind around them and climb, which allows them to become strong and grow lots of vegetables.
- Tomato Ladders
Can hold up to 100 pounds of tomatoes and cradles the vines and their fruits more effectively than stakes.
- Bean Tower
Thick supports that sit securely on the ground provide enough support for the beans to wind around and grow tall.
- Insect Netting
Netting that has a finely-woven mesh protects plants from insect damage and helps to keep away animals, such as bunnies and deer.
- Cold Frame Covers
Use a frame and protective cover to protect vegetables from frost and cold weather during the fall.
