Spring Gardening Checklist

Here’s a list of chores to do in the spring to ensure a bountiful garden for the summer.

Clean up and remove any debris, leaves, twigs and dead plants from last season. Compost or mulch the debris and add to your current flower or garden beds.

As your bulbs come up, take note of where and when they bloomed. You can do this with pictures, making a map of your garden or writing down what bloomed and where. Take note of the colours, timing and any bare spots. Then in the fall, plant or move bulbs so that next spring the bare spots are filled in and the colours work well together.

Plant seeds and plants once the threat of frost has passed.

Fertilize or seed your lawn where it is needed.

Prune spring flowering shrubs only after they have bloomed.

Prune evergreens to the desired shape and size.

Remove any dead limbs from trees or limbs that are growing too close to buildings or electrical lines and wires.
