One of the highlights of the VanDusen Botanical Garden is the Elizabethan Maze. In the fall of 1981, 3,000 pyramidal cedars were planted to create the maze. In the middle you can see a monkey puzzle tree towering over the maze. This tree is native to Southwest Argentina and Chile. It has scale-like leaves, which give the branches a soft and smooth appearance. However, it is best not to touch the leaves, as each one ends in a sharp point. This makes the tree hard to climb, even if you are a monkey!
