Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the tip of Schenley Park. Paid admission. Mostly indoors, but there are three outdoor gardens to view as well.
Phipps first opened in 1893 and has been expanded upon ever since. It was built by Henry Phipps, who wanted to create a place of learning and relaxation. The first plants that graced the Phipps greenhouses came from the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, upon the closure of the exhibit in November 1893.
In addition to the botanical gardens, Phipps also offers educational classes and production greenhouses where a wide variety of plants are grown. As well, the outdoor garden can be reserved for weddings and other special functions.
Phipps is also committed to helping the environment. It is LEED Certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and is one of the few public gardens that can boast this certification. Phipps incorporates green practices in every aspect - from the building design, to energy efficiency and using renewable energy sources, to landscaping and more!
My personal impression of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens was one of incredible beauty. Plus, there is so much to see. With the exhibits and plants changing frequently, it is worth going to see the Phipps Conservatory again and again. If I lived in Pittsburgh, I would definitely have a membership to Phipps, so that I could come here all the time to see the various exhibits.
