General Gardening Tips

Do you want to get the most from your garden? Or maybe just learn how to stop killing the plants you bring home from the garden centre? Here are some quick gardening tips and tricks (in no particular order) to help your plants grow and flourish.

1.  To keep zucchini fresh and crisp for a few days, place it in a plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator. If the zucchini is left out, it will wilt.

2.  If a recipe calls for fresh herbs, and you only have dried herbs on hand, you can rehydrate the dried herbs by placing them in a small amount of warm butter or water.

3.  If there is enough light in an area in your house for you to read a newspaper or book, then you know the area receives enough light for a plant.

4.  Save small scraps of yarn and material for the spring. Make sure that they are cleaned first before cutting. Also, cut up the fringes of old rugs, bedspreads and mop strings and save these as well. In early spring, scatter the material in your yard or garden, for birds to collect and use in their nests.

5.  If you get tree sap, from an evergreen tree, on your hands or somewhere else, try some oil (ie: vegetable oil), butter or sunblock lotion to remove the sap. Soap won’t work, but anything that has oil in it will work.

6.  Water plants thoroughly. They will respond better to a thorough watering done once a week, then watering frequently and lightly. Do not let the soil dry out otherwise it will become hard and will not absorb water easily. If the soil is allowed to dry out regularly, it will also move away from the edges of the pot and more soil will have to be added.

7.  Use a weak tea to water your plants with instead of using fertilizer.

8.  Pots with drainage holes prevent the soil from becoming water logged. They are also great to help with watering – you can pour water into the tray underneath the pot. When the plant needs water, it will soak it up from the tray.
