Want to make the best of your compost pile? It’s easy when you follow these ten simple tips.
Tip #1: It is best not to include food that has mold on it, as the mold may not be killed off during the composting process.
Tip #2: If you have the time, break down the items to be composted into smaller pieces before you add them to the compost pile. This will help to speed up the composting process.
Tip #3: Avoid adding food scraps, such as meat or fish, as this will attract raccoons and other rodents.
Tip #4: Rotate the compost pile at least once a week to get air to the middle of the pile. Use a composting bin or tumbler to make rotating simpler.
Tip #5: Add items to your compost pile in layers. If you add too much of any one item it won’t decompose properly and could cause a very smelly situation.
Tip #6: If your compost pile is dry, then add some water while rotating the pile. It is important to keep the moisture level just right. Too dry and the materials won't break down properly. Too wet and the pile will start to rot.
Tip #7: Don’t add pet waste to your compost pile. Any waste that comes from meat eating animals contains harmful bacteria to humans and should never be used as fertilizer.
Tip #8: The warmer the compost pile, the faster it will decompose. Place your compost pile in an area that receives a lot of sunshine. The heat from the sun will heat up the pile fast!
Tip #9: Add earthworms to your compost pile. Earthworms are a part of the composting process. They help in two ways. First, they digest and break down the material. Second, as they burrow into the compost pile, they allow oxygen in.
Tip #10: Finally, enjoy the fruits of your labour by adding the newly composted soil to your garden and watch as your plants flourish!
