Hummingbird Food Recipe

Hummingbirds are especially lovely and attracting them is easy. Hummingbird feeders are common and you can make your own solution to fill them with. When making your solution keep a 4 to 1 ratio – 4 parts of water to 1 part sugar. First, boil one cup of water. Next, add ¼ cup of sugar and stir until all the sugar has been dissolved. Let the mixture cool before adding to the feeder. Remember to clean the hummingbird feeder with hot water every 3 – 4 days and fill with fresh mixture.

Real nectar from plants is best as they provide the proper nutrients required, so plant lots of nectar rich flowers nearby. Pink and red flowers will attract hummingbirds the best. Once these flowers really start to grow, remove the feeder all together. The flowers will keep the hummingbirds coming.

If you do decide to keep a feeder throughout summer, it’s important to know when to stop putting the feeder out. The best sign that it’s time to put the feeder away is when the flowers themselves start to die off for the season. Hummingbirds, like most birds, will stay where there is a food source, but if they still too long the cold weather will kill them off. So, although it’s sad to see the birds leave, just remember that they will be back next summer.
